Morehead City, N.C. – Scattered heavy rain will continue across eastern North Carolina today, bringing a renewed risk for flash flooding, particularly in urban and low-lying areas. Rain will first impact coastal towns this morning before pushing inland through the afternoon and evening, raising the potential for ponding on roads and dangerous driving conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, showers will be most intense where saturated soils from recent rainfall already limit drainage. Communities such as Jacksonville, Kinston, Greenville, and Kill Devil Hills could see brief but heavy downpours that overwhelm storm drains. Smaller towns including Belhaven, Aurora, and Cedar Island are also at risk, especially near creeks and marshes.
Drivers should avoid flooded roads and keep extra travel time in mind, particularly along U.S. 70, N.C. 24, and coastal highways. Residents are advised to clear storm drains and secure outdoor items ahead of heavier bands.
Rain chances will taper late tonight, but additional showers could return midweek. Flood watches remain in effect until conditions improve.
