Greenville, N.C. – A slow-moving coastal low is expected to bring heavy rain and flooding to eastern North Carolina through tonight, raising concerns for drivers and residents along the coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the system currently east of Cape Hatteras will track inland today, producing widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. A Flood Watch remains in effect for much of eastern North Carolina, including Greenville, New Bern, and the Outer Banks.
Areas such as Kill Devil Hills, Columbia, and Washington are projected to see some of the heaviest rain, with localized flash flooding possible on low-lying roads and near poor drainage areas. Hazardous marine conditions and rough surf will also impact coastal waters, creating dangerous conditions for small craft.
Officials advise avoiding flooded roadways, monitoring local alerts, and preparing for rapidly changing conditions. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and use caution when traveling, especially in areas prone to flooding.
The coastal low is expected to gradually lift north overnight, with improving conditions likely by Tuesday morning, though additional advisories may be issued if rainfall bands linger.
