Waycross, GA – Temperatures dropping to 35°F overnight will trigger frost formation across southeast Georgia by 2 a.m. Thursday, putting crops and outdoor plants at risk before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Thursday for inland southeast Georgia, including Coffee, Ware, Appling, Wayne, and Charlton counties. Clear skies and light winds will allow rapid cooling, creating ideal conditions for frost on exposed surfaces.
Communities including Waycross, Jesup, Douglas, and Baxley will see the coldest readings just before sunrise. Rural and low-lying areas near Folkston, Homerville, and Nahunta are especially vulnerable, where temperatures can dip a degree or two lower, increasing frost coverage on crops and grassy areas.
Agricultural impacts are the primary concern across this region. Early spring planting, nurseries, and backyard gardens could see damage if plants are not protected. Residents should cover vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and avoid leaving sensitive plants exposed overnight.
Temperatures will climb quickly after 9 a.m., but similar early morning cold snaps remain possible through the end of the week, and additional advisories could be issued.
