Wilmington, North Carolina – A prolonged freezing rain event is expected to bring hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages across southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina beginning Saturday evening and lasting through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday evening for coastal and inland communities from Wilmington and Southport to Myrtle Beach, Conway, and Florence. Ice accumulations between one-tenth and two-tenths of an inch are possible, with the greatest impacts expected away from the immediate coastline where temperatures are more likely to remain below freezing.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly Saturday night as rain freezes on contact with cold surfaces. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads across Columbus, Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick, Horry, Georgetown, Florence, and Williamsburg counties may become slick or impassable. In Bladen County, where impacts are expected to be more severe, ice buildup could lead to downed tree limbs, power outages, and nearly impossible travel conditions.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, slow down, and allow extra stopping distance if travel is unavoidable. Residents should prepare for the possibility of power outages by charging devices and having flashlights ready. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511 in both North Carolina and South Carolina.
Freezing rain is expected to continue into Sunday before gradually tapering Sunday evening. Lingering ice may remain on roads and power lines beyond the advisory period, and additional warnings could be issued if ice accumulations increase.
