Coastal California Weather: Big Sur to Point Reyes Faces Hazardous Waves and Rip Currents Monday

San Francisco, Calif. – A crisp ocean breeze sweeps through the Golden Gate early Monday, carrying the roar of powerful surf echoing along the Northern California coast. Behind that sound lies a hidden danger: sneaker waves — sudden, fast-moving surges capable of pulling beachgoers into cold, turbulent water with little warning. The National Weather Service in San Francisco has issued a Beach Hazards Statement through this evening, warning residents and visitors to avoid wet sand and rocky outcrops near the shoreline.

Forecasters say a long-period northwesterly swell will pound beaches from Point Reyes to Big Sur, creating strong rip currents and unpredictable wave sets. While skies stay mostly sunny with mild air temperatures in the upper 70s inland, the ocean remains cold and unforgiving. Even experienced surfers and anglers are urged to use extreme caution. Waves of 10 to 15 seconds apart can quickly turn calm seas into a sweep zone for anyone standing too close.

Another swell is expected to arrive Tuesday, extending the risk into midweek and possibly prompting a renewed advisory. Beachgoers planning early-week outings should stay well back from jetties, tide pools, and cliffs — especially during the morning high tide cycle.

Beyond the coastal hazards, the rest of the Bay Area will enjoy tranquil fall weather. Highs near 75°F to 78°F under clear skies will continue through Wednesday, with only patchy fog returning late in the week. Still, Monday’s surf surge serves as a seasonal reminder: while autumn remains calm on land, the Pacific is anything but.
