Palm Springs, California – Extreme heat will grip the Coachella Valley, San Diego County deserts, and the San Gorgonio Pass starting Wednesday morning, sending temperatures soaring as high as 118 degrees and raising major health concerns for anyone outdoors. According to the National Weather Service, the Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Friday, with Thursday forecasted as the hottest day. Residents in Palm Springs, La Quinta, Indio, Borrego Springs, and Banning should expect dangerous afternoon highs and rapidly rising morning temperatures, with nighttime relief unlikely.
The NWS warns that heat-related illnesses will increase sharply during this period, especially for vulnerable populations. Health officials urge everyone to stay indoors during peak heat, use air conditioning, and check in on elderly neighbors or those without cooling. Hydration is critical—keep water handy, and avoid caffeine or alcohol. Roads like Interstate 10 and Highway 111 could see more emergency calls from stranded drivers, and parked cars will reach deadly temperatures within minutes. If you must travel, never leave children or pets inside a vehicle, even briefly.
This extended heat event could also impact power grids, with higher energy use possibly leading to rolling blackouts. Prepare by charging devices and limiting appliance use during the afternoon peak. Warnings remain in effect through Friday evening, and additional alerts are possible if the heat continues into the weekend.
