Clovis, NM – Drivers across eastern New Mexico have just hours to prepare as 60 mph wind gusts begin slamming roads by midnight, creating dangerous crosswinds and sudden drops in visibility through Friday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a High Wind Warning takes effect at midnight and lasts until 3 p.m. Friday for Curry, Quay, Roosevelt, and Union counties. Northeast winds will sustain between 30 and 40 mph, with stronger gusts capable of downing tree limbs and stressing power infrastructure.
Conditions will be especially hazardous along I-40 near Tucumcari and US-60 and US-54, where blowing dust may cut visibility below a quarter mile at times. NMDOT warns high-profile vehicles, including semis and RVs, face rollover risks on exposed stretches.
Communities including Clovis, Portales, and Logan could see sporadic power outages as wind impacts peak during the morning commute. Residents should secure loose outdoor items immediately and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind hours.
The strongest winds ease after 3 p.m. Friday, but additional advisories may follow if conditions redevelop into the weekend.
