Clinton County, IL: Human Remains Found Near Centralia, Investigation Underway

Investigators say remains do not match any current missing person cases in the area

Carlyle, IL – The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation after possible human remains were discovered near Centralia in unincorporated Clinton County on October 10, 2025, officials announced Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Dan Travous, deputies and detectives were dispatched to the area after receiving a report of the discovery. The remains were located and examined at the scene before being turned over to the Clinton County Coroner’s Office. The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit also assisted in processing the site.

Authorities said the remains have not yet been identified, and it is unclear how long they had been at the location. The cause of death also remains undetermined.

Investigators noted that the remains do not appear to match any known missing person cases from the Centralia area. The sheriff’s office is asking the public to report any information about missing individuals who may not have been previously documented.
