Cleveland, Ohio – Residents across northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania should prepare for a potentially dangerous round of severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening, with the highest threat centered between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Forecasters warn that damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes are all possible as a cold front sweeps across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of the approaching cold front during the late afternoon before moving east through Saturday evening. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of northern Ohio, including the Cleveland metro, under a Level 3 of 5 (Enhanced Risk) for severe weather, while surrounding areas remain under a Level 2 of 5 (Slight Risk).

The primary hazard will be damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, with the greatest confidence extending from Ohio’s central lakeshore into northwest Pennsylvania. Storms may also produce hail at least 1 inch in diameter, torrential rainfall and a couple of tornadoes, especially within the enhanced risk area.

Communities including Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Ashtabula, Sandusky, Mansfield, Erie, Meadville and surrounding areas should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Heavy rain could reduce visibility on Interstates 71, 77, 80 and 90, while strong wind gusts may bring down trees and power lines, causing scattered outages.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, secure loose outdoor items before storms arrive and be ready to move to a sturdy building if a warning is issued. The National Weather Service says additional watches and warnings are likely as thunderstorms begin developing Saturday afternoon.
