Cleveland, OH – The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Gale Warning and Low Water Advisory for much of Lake Erie beginning Wednesday morning, October 22, as powerful winds and dropping lake levels combine to create dangerous marine conditions.

According to the NWS, west to southwest winds up to 35 knots with gusts reaching 40 knots will generate waves of 7 to 13 feet across both nearshore and open waters. The Gale Warning will remain in effect from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. EDT Wednesday.

In addition, a Low Water Advisory begins 10 p.m. Tuesday and continues through Wednesday night, affecting areas from The Islands to Vermilion. Forecasters warn that strong westerly winds will push water eastward, causing levels to fall below critical marks—posing risks for shallow navigation and harbor access.

The warnings extend across the entire Ohio shoreline, from Vermilion to Conneaut and eastward to Ripley, New York. Mariners are strongly urged to remain in port, secure vessels, and avoid shallow or exposed areas.

These hazardous lake conditions are part of a broader wind pattern sweeping the Great Lakes this week, with waves and water levels expected to gradually stabilize by Thursday morning.
