CLEVELAND, Ohio – Strong northeast winds are churning up Lake Erie Thursday, creating dangerous swim conditions and boating hazards along Ohio’s shoreline. Waves are expected to reach 3 to 6 feet, prompting warnings for swimmers and boaters from Cleveland to Conneaut.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Beach Hazard Statements and Small Craft Advisories remain in effect through late Thursday evening. The advisory covers popular beaches including Kelleys Island, Edgewater Park, Huntington Beach, Euclid Beach, Headlands Beach, Fairport Harbor, and Presque Isle.
Officials warn swimmers to stay out of the water and away from piers, breakwalls, and river outlets, where strong currents can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers. Boaters operating small craft should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions, as winds and waves could capsize vessels.
The weather service urges beachgoers to obey all posted warnings and closures. Safety officials recommend staying dry when waves are high, charging devices before heading out, and monitoring updates for changing lake conditions.
Hazard statements remain in effect until late Thursday evening, with improving conditions expected by Friday.
