Cleveland, Ohio – A surge of high pressure is setting up an unseasonably cold night across northern Ohio and into northwest Pennsylvania, with temperatures dipping well below late-August norms. Some communities could see readings in the low 40s before sunrise Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, clear skies and light winds will allow heat to escape quickly tonight, driving lows into the mid-40s to low 50s for most of the region. Areas along U.S. 30, as well as parts of interior northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania, are expected to be the coldest, with temperatures bottoming out in the low 40s.

Cities including Mansfield, Wooster, and Ravenna will start Saturday morning in the mid-40s, while Ashtabula and Erie, Pa., could briefly dip into the lower 40s. Even along the Lake Erie shoreline, Cleveland and Sandusky will cool into the upper 40s to near 50.

Residents are urged to plan ahead for the sudden chill, especially those heading out early for travel or outdoor events. Farmers and gardeners in rural counties should also prepare for the potential impact of unusually cool overnight temperatures on late-summer crops.

Conditions will remain dry into the weekend, but temperatures won’t rebound quickly. More seasonable warmth is not expected until early next week.
