Ohio – Snow whips sideways along the lakeshore as visibility drops and plows struggle to keep pace. Lake effect bands continue to hammer parts of northeast Ohio, turning routine drives into slow, tense crawls as winter tightens its grip heading toward the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect through this evening. Persistent snow bands may produce up to 4 inches of additional accumulation beneath the heaviest bursts. Winds gusting over 30 mph are causing blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions at times.
In Cleveland and nearby communities, travel remains difficult through the evening commute. Snow-covered roads and sharply reduced visibility are expected along I-90, I-71, and Route 2, especially closer to the lakeshore. Even brief lulls can end quickly as bands shift inland without warning.
Snow showers continue Friday and Saturday, though with lighter accumulations. The bigger issue becomes cold. Arctic air pushes in, dropping overnight lows into the single digits. Wind chills near or below zero are possible during the weekend, making exposed skin sting within minutes.
Drivers should delay unnecessary travel, carry winter emergency kits, and allow extra stopping distance. Walkers and commuters should brace against biting winds and drifting snow, especially near open areas and elevated roadways.
Looking ahead, winter stays active into early next week. Additional systems and reinforcing cold fronts could bring more accumulating snow and prolonged cold across northeast Ohio.
