CLEVELAND, Ohio – The first true lake-effect snow event of the season is setting up across northern Ohio tonight, with cold northwest winds expected to funnel bands of heavy snow inland from Lake Erie through Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service warns that rapidly changing conditions and reduced visibility could make travel treacherous at times, especially along the I-90 corridor and higher inland terrain.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday evening through Tuesday morning for Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula, Medina, Summit, Portage, and Trumbull Counties. Forecasts call for 2 to 5 inches of heavy, wet snow, with localized totals over 6 inches possible in persistent lake bands near the snowbelt.

The Monday morning and evening commutes could be significantly impacted, as snowfall rates reach 1 to 2 inches per hour within well-organized bands. Winds gusting 25–35 mph may lead to blowing snow and isolated power outages, particularly where trees still hold late-season leaves.

Travelers along I-90, I-480, and Route 2 should prepare for whiteout conditions, while inland routes near Chardon, Mentor, and Ravenna may become slick and snow-covered. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and keep emergency kits in vehicles.

This system marks a classic early-season lake-effect setup, with colder air continuing to pour across the Great Lakes through midweek. Drier conditions are expected to return by Wednesday afternoon.
