Cleveland, OH – Northern Ohio residents could spot the northern lights tonight as a powerful G4 geomagnetic storm continues to expand visibility deep into the Great Lakes region. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center reports that auroras may again be visible across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and surrounding states — a rare event for this far south.

According to the US National Weather Service Cleveland, skies are expected to remain mostly clear overnight, providing a window of opportunity for viewing between 9 p.m. and midnight. For the best chance to see the aurora, head away from city lights and look north toward the horizon, where faint red and green glows may appear.

At the same time, the NWS is reminding residents to prepare for winter weather season. As part of Fall 2025 Skywarn Training, the office is offering free virtual classes for anyone interested in learning how to identify and report severe or winter weather hazards. Sessions run November 17, November 24, and December 6, with registration available online at weather.gov/cle/SKYWARN_schedule.

Whether you’re watching the skies for auroras tonight or preparing for snow later this season, forecasters encourage residents to stay weather-aware and get involved in community safety efforts.
