Cleveland, Ohio – Temperatures will plunge into the low 20s overnight, and up to 1 inch of snow could coat stretches of I-90 and I-71 by 6 a.m. Sunday, creating slick spots just in time for early morning travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a cold front will sweep east across northern Ohio Saturday evening, ending the dry afternoon and ushering in light snow overnight. Accumulations are expected to remain at or below 1 inch, but falling temperatures behind the front will allow untreated roads and bridges to freeze quickly.
Across the state, highs Saturday reach the 40s before the sharp cooldown sets in. By late evening, readings will slide through the 20s from Toledo to Youngstown. In the Cleveland metro area, drivers along I-480, I-77 and I-271 may notice wet pavement turning icy after 10 p.m., especially on overpasses and elevated ramps.
While snowfall totals remain minor, the timing increases the risk for reduced traction before sunrise Sunday. ODOT crews will monitor primary highways, but secondary roads could become patchy and slick. Motorists should reduce speeds, leave extra stopping distance and watch for black ice where pavement appears merely damp.
Skies gradually clear Sunday, but cold air lingers through the morning with temperatures holding in the 20s. Any untreated surfaces may stay icy until late morning. Additional updates will be issued if snowfall totals trend higher or if travel impacts expand overnight.
