Cleveland, Ohio – A sheriff’s K-9 helped arrest a 19-year-old allegedly tied to an armed mail carrier robbery, authorities said.
According to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Jim DeCredico spotted a stolen SUV connected to the Dec. 29 robbery in Akron and initiated a stop in Cleveland. Body camera video released to FOX 8 shows the deputy’s K-9 partner, Felix, apprehending the suspect within seconds.
Authorities identified the suspect as Delshawn Durval Legg, 19, of Cleveland. Investigators allege Legg participated in the robbery of a U.S. mail carrier on West Long Street in Akron. Police said the suspects allegedly threatened a female postal worker at gunpoint, took her keys and stole a bag of mail.
According to investigators, Akron police, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI worked jointly to track down those involved. The stolen SUV was later located in Cleveland by sheriff’s deputies.
Legg allegedly suffered a minor injury during the arrest and was taken into custody. A second suspect was arrested several days later. Both individuals are facing federal charges, authorities said.
Cuyahoga County Sheriff Lt. Miguel Carabello credited the coordinated effort among agencies for the swift arrest.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing and additional details may be released as the case proceeds in federal court.
The case highlights the federal response that often follows crimes targeting postal workers, who are protected under federal law.
