Cleveland, Ohio – Dangerous cold conditions will persist across the Cleveland area as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon Tuesday, bringing wind chills as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, west to southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph are combining with frigid air temperatures to produce hazardous wind chills across much of northeast Ohio. The advisory began Monday evening and continues through Tuesday morning, with the coldest conditions expected overnight and during the early commute.

NWS Cleveland reports that wind chills in the -10° to -20° range can quickly lead to hypothermia or frostbite if proper precautions are not taken. Exposed skin can be affected in a short period of time, particularly when winds remain elevated.

While this advisory primarily highlights cold exposure risks, the conditions may also affect roadway safety, especially overnight. Extremely cold temperatures can cause refreezing on untreated roads, even where pavement appears dry. Drivers traveling late Monday night or early Tuesday should remain alert for slick spots.

Major routes including Interstate 90, Interstate 71, Interstate 77, and the Ohio Turnpike, along with bridges and elevated roadways, may be impacted during the coldest hours. Reduced reaction time and vehicle issues, such as battery problems, are also more common in extreme cold.

The National Weather Service urges residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Motorists should ensure vehicles are winter-ready and allow extra travel time during the overnight and morning commute.

Commuters, students, and early-morning workers in the Cleveland area should plan for dangerously cold wind chills through Tuesday morning and continue monitoring forecast updates as conditions gradually improve later in the day.
