Cleveland, OH – A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula Counties from 1 a.m. Thursday through 7 p.m. Friday, as forecasters warn of heavy snow, strong winds, and whiteout conditions just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday travel rush.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, total snow accumulations between 4 and 13 inches are expected, with the highest amounts likely in northern Geauga County, Lake County south of I-90, and northeast Ashtabula County. Winds could gust up to 50 mph, producing blowing and drifting snow and potentially downing power lines.
Forecasters say snow bands will intensify Thursday morning and persist through Friday, with snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour at times. Visibility may fall below a quarter mile, and roads—especially bridges and overpasses—are likely to become slick and hazardous.
Officials are urging drivers to delay unnecessary travel, especially during peak snow bands Thursday afternoon and evening. The Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio Turnpike Commission recommend checking ohgo.com for up-to-date road conditions.
Travelers should ensure vehicles are winter-ready and keep emergency kits with flashlights, blankets, and water. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Friday night as winds subside and snow bands weaken.
