Cleveland, OH – The National Weather Service (NWS) Cleveland has issued multiple winter alerts as a strong clipper system moves across the Great Lakes, bringing snow, a wintry mix, and gusty winds to northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania.
The system will produce snow accumulations of 3 to 10 inches across the region, with localized totals exceeding 12 inches in parts of Erie County, Pennsylvania, where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect through Thursday night. The heaviest snow will occur in the Snowbelt east of Cleveland, including Geauga and Ashtabula Counties, which are under a Winter Weather Advisory for 3–7 inches of snow.
As colder air surges over Lake Erie, lake-effect snow bands will intensify tonight and continue into Thursday evening. Forecasters warn that gusts up to 40 mph could lead to blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions in localized areas.
“Travel will become increasingly hazardous, especially tonight through Thursday night,” the NWS said early Wednesday. “Poor visibility and snow-covered roads will make driving difficult across the Snowbelt.”
Motorists traveling along I-90 and I-80 should allow extra time and check for updated road conditions before heading out. Cities such as Cleveland, Mentor, Chardon, and Ashtabula are expected to see steady snow accumulation with occasional bursts of heavier snow overnight.
Conditions will gradually improve late Thursday night into Friday as the snow tapers off and winds subside.
