Cleveland, OH – A prolonged and dangerous lake effect snow event is underway across northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania, with heavy snowfall expected to continue through early Monday morning, making travel extremely difficult across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Lake Effect Snow Warnings remain in effect for Erie and Crawford counties in Pennsylvania, as well as Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties in Ohio. The warnings run through 7 a.m. Monday, with some areas beginning impacts as early as Saturday morning.
Forecasters expect 7 to 14 inches of snow in parts of Erie and Crawford counties, with the highest totals in the higher terrain of southern Erie County. Across northern Ohio, snowfall totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected, especially in eastern Cuyahoga County, southern Lake County, inland Ashtabula County, and much of Geauga County.
Snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour at times, particularly from late Saturday morning through Sunday evening. Winds gusting up to 30 to 35 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility, especially along and near Lake Erie.
Transportation officials in both states strongly urge residents to delay unnecessary travel. Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly, with slick roads, poor visibility, and rapidly changing conditions. Drivers who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies and check road conditions before departing using 511PA or OHGO.
