Cle Elum, WA – Hazardous winter travel conditions are expected to continue around Cle Elum and the eastern slopes of the Washington Cascades through Thursday afternoon, as snow and freezing rain impact mountain routes and nearby communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. PST Thursday for the lower and upper slopes of the Eastern Washington Cascades Crest, including Cle Elum, Easton, Roslyn, Cliffdell, and Appleton. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected on lower slopes, while upper elevations could see between 4 and 10 inches of snowfall, mainly through Thursday morning.
Forecasters say periods of freezing rain are also possible Thursday, with ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch. While confidence in heavier icing remains low, even light ice could significantly worsen road conditions, especially during the morning commute.
Strong winds and blowing snow may reduce visibility along major travel corridors, including Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 12. Officials warn that periods of moderate to heavy snowfall could make travel difficult, particularly over mountain passes where conditions can change rapidly.
Additional Winter Weather Advisories are also in effect across the Northern Blue Mountains of Oregon and Washington, as well as the east slopes of the Oregon Cascades. In those areas, snow totals of 3 to 7 inches are expected Thursday, with gusty winds further complicating travel.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for winter driving conditions. Tree branches could be brought down by snow and wind, and untreated roads may become slick due to freezing rain.
Travelers are encouraged to check the latest road conditions before heading out by visiting wsdot.wa.gov/travel or calling 511. Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Thursday, though lingering impacts may persist into Friday morning at higher elevations.
