Claymont, DE – A Dover man was arrested after allegedly fleeing a Delaware State Police traffic stop on I-95 and leading troopers on a pursuit through Claymont Thursday morning.

According to Delaware State Police, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on October 23 when a trooper observed a Volkswagen Jetta commit several traffic violations on I-95 near Harvey Road. The driver, later identified as 34-year-old Datahj Smith, allegedly showed signs of impairment and gave a false name to the officer before speeding away.

Troopers say Smith exited I-95 and continued onto Naaman’s Road, driving at high speeds and recklessly before being stopped near Concord Pike. Police reported finding approximately 53.5 grams of suspected PCP and 0.27 grams of suspected heroin during a subsequent vehicle search.

Smith was taken to Troop 1, where he allegedly failed field sobriety tests. He was charged with several offenses, including possession of a controlled substance, disregarding a police signal, criminal impersonation, and driving under the influence.

He was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $28,114 cash bond.
