Clay County, Missouri – A vehicle struck and killed a wild elk early Wednesday near Kearney, prompting a response from deputies and state conservation agents.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 5:30 a.m. to Sumbersette Road near Means Street, southeast of Kearney, after a report of a vehicle hitting an elk.
Deputies contacted the Missouri Department of Conservation, whose agents confirmed the animal was a wild elk. Authorities said the elk did not survive the crash.
The driver was not at the scene when deputies arrived, and officials said they are unsure whether the person was injured.
The sheriff’s office noted that while wild elk are present in southeast Missouri, sightings in Clay County are uncommon. Officials urged drivers to remain alert for both deer and elk, particularly during early morning hours when wildlife is more active.
The incident did not result in reported roadway closures, but drivers in the area may notice increased wildlife movement.
Wildlife-related crashes can cause significant vehicle damage and pose serious safety risks, especially on rural or less-traveled roads.
Authorities have not released additional details about the vehicle involved.
