Cincinnati, OH – Numerous rounds of heavy rain swept through southern Ohio Wednesday afternoon, flooding low-lying streets from Cincinnati to Portsmouth and slowing traffic on major routes like I-71 and U.S. 52. Emergency managers urged drivers to avoid water-covered roads as storms continue to push east.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Flood Watch remains in effect across the southern counties until late Wednesday, with several inches of rain possible in localized areas. Bands of thunderstorms are moving east from Cincinnati through Dayton, Chillicothe, and Portsmouth, bringing downpours and brief gusty winds.

Hamilton, Clermont, Brown, and Scioto counties have reported rapidly rising creek levels and minor urban flooding. In Cincinnati, city crews have blocked off multiple intersections prone to flash flooding, while public works in Dayton and Portsmouth monitor vulnerable roadways. Some schools and daycares announced early dismissals, and local utilities warned of potential power interruptions if lightning persists.

Residents are urged to stay off flooded roads, charge phones, and monitor weather alerts. Flood Watches remain active through Wednesday evening, with additional warnings possible as storms persist.
