Accumulating snow is expected across parts of southern Ohio today, creating hazardous travel conditions through the afternoon and early evening hours, particularly south of Interstate 70.

According to the National Weather Service Wilmington, snow will move into the region this morning, intensify during the afternoon, and continue into the early evening before gradually tapering off. The highest impacts are expected near the Ohio River, where snowfall totals will be greatest.

Forecast amounts indicate 1 to 2 inches north of the heaviest band, with 2 to 4 inches possible across southern counties, including areas near Cincinnati, Portsmouth, Hillsboro, and Chillicothe. Snowfall rates may be sufficient at times to quickly cover roadways and reduce visibility during heavier bursts.

Travel along Interstate 71, Interstate 75, U.S. 23, U.S. 50, and U.S. 52 is expected to be impacted as snow peaks during the afternoon commute. Snow-covered roads and slick conditions are likely, especially on untreated surfaces, bridges, ramps, and overpasses.

The National Weather Service reports that snow will gradually shift out of the area as the evening progresses, but lingering slick spots may persist overnight as temperatures remain cold. Additional snow showers are also possible Friday into Friday night, keeping winter travel concerns in place later this week.

Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and increase following distance. Sudden changes in road conditions are possible over short distances, particularly near the Ohio River and in higher terrain.

This system may especially impact commuters, students, and commercial drivers traveling during peak afternoon and early evening hours across southern Ohio.
