WILMINGTON, Ohio – Damp air and a biting west wind sweep across southern Ohio this morning, the kind that hints winter is closer than it looks. Clouds are thickening, and temperatures hover near freezing — just cold enough for a mix of light flurries and drizzle that could make roads slick by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a weak system will move through the Ohio Valley on Saturday, bringing a rain-to-snow mix that may create slushy conditions into Sunday morning. The highest chance of light accumulation — up to an inch in grassy areas — will stretch from Wilmington north toward Dayton and Springfield, with spotty slick patches possible along I-71 and U.S. 68.

Drivers should plan for slower travel, especially early Sunday when colder air filters in and any lingering moisture could refreeze. Winds will pick up through the day, gusting up to 25 mph as temperatures fall into the low 30s.

Meteorologists say this is a “winter tease” ahead of a sharper cold front expected by midweek. Models suggest that temperatures will plunge well below normal by next Thursday, with a stronger system possibly tracking across the Midwest as early as December 3 — one that could bring accumulating snow from Chicago to Columbus.

For now, keep winter gear close and plan extra time for Sunday drives. The pattern shift toward colder, more active weather has begun — and it’s only growing stronger heading into the first week of December.
