DuPage County, IL – A Cicero man is now detained after allegedly slipping out of his handcuffs and attempting to flee the DuPage County courthouse following a court appearance. Javier Barajas, 23, appeared for a hearing on charges of Aggravated Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle when he allegedly freed himself from handcuffs and made a run for the courthouse lobby.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Barajas exited the courtroom and ran down a hallway before deputies intercepted him. Authorities allege he resisted re-arrest, resulting in an injury to a sheriff’s deputy who sprained his knee and ankle during the struggle.

“Court-ordered pre-trial conditions are not optional,” said State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, who praised the quick actions of deputies in capturing Barajas. Sheriff James Mendrick expressed concerns about repeated arrests under the Safe-T Act, emphasizing the department’s commitment to courthouse safety despite legislative changes.

Barajas, who faces multiple felony charges, is scheduled for his next court appearance on Nov. 25. He remains detained awaiting trial.
