Christian County, IL – Two separate traffic crashes claimed the lives of two women Wednesday in rural Christian County, according to the Christian County Sheriff’s Office. Both incidents occurred hours apart on local roadways east of Taylorville.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the first crash happened around 7:52 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 1300 East Road and 2000 North Road. Investigators say a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt was heading west when it allegedly failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica traveling south. The Pacifica was hit on the driver’s side.

All occupants were taken to area hospitals. The driver of the Chrysler Pacifica, 37-year-old Jessica Stephens, later died from her injuries, authorities confirmed.

The second fatal crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. near 003 North 1300 East Road. Investigators report a red 2019 Cadillac SUV, driven by 91-year-old Mary Ann Johnson of Nokomis, entered the intersection from 000 North Road and was struck by a southbound 2020 Chevrolet pickup truck.

Both drivers were taken to Taylorville Memorial Hospital, where Johnson was later pronounced dead.

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office and Christian County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate both incidents.
