Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Freeze Watch for portions of western Virginia, warning residents of subfreezing temperatures expected late Thursday night into early Friday morning. Areas most at risk include Greenbrier and Bath Counties, where temperatures could drop near or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Blacksburg VA, an area of high pressure moving over New York will extend its influence southward, bringing clear skies, calm winds, and colder-than-normal conditions across the region. The combination of light winds and limited cloud cover is expected to cause frost formation in mountain valleys and along the I-64 corridor.

Forecasters caution that freezing temperatures could damage crops, kill sensitive vegetation, and harm unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are advised to cover plants with light cloths or move them indoors where possible.

Low temperatures tonight are forecast to range from the upper 20s in the higher elevations to the low 40s across southern Virginia, with cities like Roanoke and Lynchburg expected to see lows in the upper 30s.

The Freeze Watch will remain in effect until Friday morning, after which temperatures are expected to gradually warm into the weekend.
