Marengo, IL – An 11-year-old child was killed and a 29-year-old man seriously injured following a two-vehicle crash Monday evening in unincorporated Marengo, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

According to authorities, the crash occurred around 6:41 p.m. at the intersection of Kishwaukee Valley Road and Deerpass Road. Emergency responders from the Marengo Fire/Rescue District, Woodstock Fire Protection District, Mercyhealth MD-1, and Huntley Fire Protection District were dispatched to the scene.

Investigators say an 18-year-old Huntley man was driving a 2016 Ford Transit Van north on Deerpass Road, where he approached a stop sign at the intersection. A 2012 Audi Q5, driven by a 29-year-old Wonder Lake man with an 11-year-old passenger, was traveling east on Kishwaukee Valley Road, which does not have a stop sign. Authorities allege the Ford driver failed to stop, entering the intersection and crashing into the Audi, which then struck a tree off the north side of the roadway.

The Ford driver was taken to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Woodstock with minor injuries. The Audi driver was transported to Northwestern Huntley Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The child passenger in the Audi was taken to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, where they were later pronounced dead.

Both vehicles had deployed airbags, and all occupants were reportedly wearing seat belts. Authorities stated that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being handled by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit along with the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.
