Porter County, IN – A Chicago woman was arrested for OWI Saturday after reportedly crashing into an I-94 scale house near Chesterton.
According to Indiana State Police, a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe drove into the eastbound entrance gate of the scale house at high speed. The vehicle reportedly struck street signs, light poles, and shattered windows before coming to a rest against a guardrail on the bypass lane.
Police reported that 28-year-old Lopez Monserrath, the driver, reportedly intended to drive home but traveled eastbound toward Indiana instead of Illinois. Monserrath reportedly refused a certified chemical test and was taken to Porter County Jail.
Damages to the scale house, signs, and poles were estimated to be several thousand dollars. Debris from the crash was scattered throughout the scene.
Indiana State Police noted all suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in court. The case will be reviewed by the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office.
