Chicago, IL – Thanksgiving travelers across Illinois and northwest Indiana could face hazardous road conditions through Wednesday evening as powerful wind gusts barrel across the region. Gusts as high as 55 mph are already being reported, with potential for isolated bursts nearing 60 mph near the Wisconsin border by mid-afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. CST, covering a wide stretch of counties including Cook, Lake, Will, LaSalle, and into Porter and Jasper counties in Indiana. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are making travel risky, particularly on north-to-south highways like I-39, I-57, and U.S. 41, where crosswinds may cause high-profile vehicles to sway or veer.
Scattered power outages are possible due to falling tree limbs, and unsecured holiday decorations are at risk of being damaged or blown away. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep both hands on the wheel, and avoid open areas if possible. Light objects should be secured ahead of worsening conditions this afternoon.
The advisory remains active until 9 p.m. CST tonight, and additional weather statements may be issued if gusts intensify or damage reports increase.
