Chicago, Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms will blanket much of northern Illinois today, with the greatest impact expected along and south of I-80 through 3 p.m. Tuesday. Residents from Chicago to Joliet and Ottawa could see strong gusty winds and brief torrential downpours just as the afternoon commute begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered showers and isolated storms are ongoing north of I-80 from now until mid-afternoon. Areas south of I-80, including Morris, Joliet, Ottawa, and Watseka, should prepare for increased storm coverage between 2 and 9 p.m., with the strongest storms expected during late afternoon hours.

Gusty winds may knock down small branches or unsecured outdoor items in the highlighted yellow zone, and brief torrential rain could lead to localized flooding—especially on low-lying roads. The threat zone stretches from Rockford and Aurora to Chicago, expanding into parts of northwest Indiana later today. Major interstates, including I-55, I-57, and I-80, could see hazardous travel conditions as storms move east at 20 mph.

People across northern Illinois are urged to move indoors when storms approach, avoid flooded roadways, and stay weather-aware as scattered thunderstorms may develop quickly. Charge devices and delay outdoor plans where possible, as additional advisories could be issued if storm intensity increases.
