Chicago, IL – Dry and breezy conditions across northern Illinois on Sunday will create an elevated fire danger, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago. The agency warns that warm surface conditions combined with low humidity and gusty winds may allow fires to start and spread more easily through the afternoon.

According to the NWS, Sunday’s highs will range from 47–52 degrees, with the warmest readings expected near Chicago and along Lake Michigan. Winds will remain breezy, reinforcing the enhanced fire weather risk until early evening. Overnight lows will fall into the mid-20s to mid-30s, depending on location.

More seasonable temperatures will settle in through midweek. Monday will bring highs in the mid-40s to lower 50s, with mostly cloudy skies developing ahead of the region’s next round of precipitation. Rain chances increase to 60–70% Monday night, continuing into Tuesday morning as a weak system moves through.

Tuesday will remain cooler with highs between 42–52 degrees, and spotty showers tapering by midday. Another brief chance for showers may return Wednesday, though probabilities remain lower, around 20–30%, as partly cloudy skies return.

The NWS encourages residents to avoid outdoor burning Sunday and to use caution with anything that may spark a fire, including grills, cigarettes, and towing chains.
