Chicago, Illinois – Humid air and spotty thunderstorms will keep much of northern Illinois unsettled through Tuesday, with the heaviest activity expected near and south of Interstate 80. The National Weather Service warns that localized downpours and lightning could develop at any time today, especially in areas southeast of Interstate 55.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storm chances today range from 20% to 40%, with highs climbing into the mid-to-upper 80s. A few stronger cells may produce brief heavy rain, potentially slowing travel on I-80 and adjacent highways during the afternoon commute. On Tuesday, scattered thunderstorms could re-develop by late day, with the highest risk southeast of the city during the evening.

Drier and slightly cooler air will move in by Wednesday, bringing sunshine and less humidity. Highs will settle in the low to mid-80s for much of the second half of the week, making for more comfortable outdoor conditions.

Residents should remain weather-aware through Tuesday night, avoiding outdoor activities during any thunderstorm. Storm chances drop significantly after early Wednesday.
