Chicago, Illinois – Fast-moving severe thunderstorms could slam into the Chicago area by Thursday afternoon, bringing 70 mph wind gusts, large hail, and localized flooding during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered strong to severe storms are expected Thursday afternoon into the evening, with all severe hazards possible. Damaging winds remain the primary threat, but storms could also produce hail capable of damaging vehicles and an isolated tornado.
Heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding, especially on major roadways including I-90, I-94, and Lake Shore Drive, where water could quickly accumulate during intense downpours. Storms are expected to move northeast at 40 to 45 mph, increasing the risk of sudden, short-notice impacts.
The threat continues beyond Thursday, with multiple waves of showers and storms expected through Saturday. Additional rounds could bring repeated heavy rainfall and renewed severe potential, especially during peak heating hours.
Temperatures will swing widely, climbing into the upper 60s to mid-70s Thursday before cooling into the 50s and 60s by the weekend.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, secure outdoor items, and monitor alerts as conditions can change rapidly Thursday afternoon and evening.
