Chicago, Illinois – Chicagoans woke up Friday to a stunning temperature reversal, as mild springlike warmth vanished almost overnight and was replaced by bitter cold and subzero wind chills across the city.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, temperatures at O’Hare Airport dropped to around 10 degrees early Friday morning, with wind chills falling to near minus 7. Just a day earlier, the city reached the low 50s. Midway Airport reported similar conditions, with temperatures near 11 degrees and wind chills around minus 8. Rockford saw one of the sharpest drops, plunging to 7 degrees with wind chills near minus 13.
Forecasters say the region experienced a temperature drop of roughly 40 degrees in less than 24 hours, while “feels like” temperatures fell by as much as 50 degrees once wind was factored in. The dramatic shift followed the passage of a powerful cold front that swept Arctic air deep into northern Illinois overnight.
Strong northwest winds are keeping the cold locked in through Friday, making even brief time outdoors uncomfortable. Exposed skin can become numb quickly, especially during the morning hours, and residents are urged to bundle up and cover hands, ears, and faces. While skies may offer some sunshine, the combination of wind and cold will keep conditions harsh throughout the day.
Travel impacts are expected to be limited, but icy patches may develop on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks as lingering moisture freezes. Officials also recommend checking on vulnerable neighbors and ensuring pets have adequate protection from the cold.
Temperatures are expected to remain well below normal through Friday night before a gradual moderation begins this weekend. Even with a slow rebound, forecasters caution that winter has firmly reasserted itself after one of the most abrupt temperature swings of the season.
