Chicago, IL – Late September is feeling more like late August this week as unseasonably warm weather continues across northern Illinois. Residents can expect plenty of sunshine and highs in the 80s through at least Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
According to the NWS Chicago office, Saturday and Sunday will bring mostly sunny skies, with highs ranging from the mid-70s near Lake Michigan to the upper 80s inland. Overnight lows will fall into the low- to mid-60s, offering cool relief after warm afternoons.
The heat will peak Monday and Tuesday, with forecast highs reaching between 76–89 degrees Monday and 78–87 degrees Tuesday. Conditions will be warmest away from the lakefront, where a cooling breeze will keep shoreline neighborhoods slightly cooler. Wednesday is expected to bring more seasonable readings in the lower 70s, though sunshine is still expected.
The NWS noted that no widespread or meaningful rainfall is expected through at least the middle of next week. That means residents can plan outdoor activities without major weather concerns, though warm afternoons could still be uncomfortable for some.
While late September typically ushers in cooler, more autumn-like weather across the Midwest, the current pattern is delivering one more taste of summer. Average highs for Chicago this time of year are in the upper 60s, meaning the upcoming stretch will run about 10 to 15 degrees above normal.
Officials recommend staying hydrated and taking precautions during peak afternoon heat, especially for those spending extended time outdoors.
