Chicago, Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms and relentless rain are set to drench Chicago and much of northern Illinois through late Wednesday night, threatening flooded roads and power outages for thousands.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, multiple rounds of storms will move across the region from late Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing periods of heavy rainfall. The heaviest bands may dump several inches of rain in short bursts, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas, city streets, underpasses, and creeks. Severe weather levels remain at 2 of 5, while flash flooding threat is marked at 3 of 4 for the area.
Drivers across Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Lake counties should watch for sudden water over roadways, especially during morning and evening commutes. Local emergency management urges residents to charge phones and check flashlights in case of outages, and to never drive through flooded roads. Damaging winds capable of downing tree limbs are also possible with stronger storms, and scattered lightning strikes could disrupt outdoor plans.
Soaking rains will move east at 30–40 mph, with thunderstorm threats continuing until Wednesday night. More advisories may be issued if storms intensify or if flooding worsens.
