CHICAGO, Ill. – Scattered thunderstorms could bring heavy downpours to the Chicago area Friday night, with additional storm chances and dangerous heat expected through Tuesday. Drivers and residents near I-80 may face flash flooding and triple-digit heat indices into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, thunderstorms remain possible into the overnight hours with localized heavy rainfall. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, isolated strong storms may produce torrential downpours and minor flooding.

Saturday and Sunday bring a continued risk for thunderstorms, with forecasters assigning a Level 1 of 5 severe weather threat. Afternoon heat index values could climb above 100 degrees, particularly south of I-80, creating elevated excessive heat concerns.

Chicago, Aurora, Joliet, and northwest Indiana cities including Hammond and Gary may see the highest storm and heat risks. Heavy rain could overwhelm storm drains, and localized flooding may affect low-lying roadways. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak heat and avoid driving through flooded streets.

Storm chances linger through Tuesday, followed by calmer and cooler conditions midweek. Additional weather advisories remain possible as the system tracks east.
