Chicago, IL – Strong westerly winds are expected to sweep across northern Illinois beginning this afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in Chicago, Joliet, and along the I-39 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Wind Advisory is in effect for areas north and near the Illinois and Kankakee Rivers starting at 4 p.m. CDT near and west of I-39, and 6 p.m. closer to the Chicago metro area. The advisory will remain in effect until 12 a.m. Monday.

The highest wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph are anticipated in counties including Cook, Will, Kane, DuPage, and Kankakee. Areas further south, such as Pontiac and Paxton, could still experience gusts of 40 to 45 mph. These conditions may cause unsecured objects to blow around, sporadic power outages, and difficult travel on north-south oriented roads.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture and decorations ahead of the advisory period. Drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, should use caution when traveling in open or exposed areas.

The winds are expected to shift from southerly to strong westerly by early evening, a pattern more intense than typical spring wind events in the region.
