Chicago, IL – Boaters along southern Lake Michigan are being urged to get to shore immediately as strong thunderstorms sweep across the lake Saturday morning. The storms are producing wind gusts up to 40 knots, creating dangerous conditions for small craft and shoreline harbors.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the Special Marine Warning remains in effect until 8:15 a.m. for waters from Wilmette Harbor south to Michigan City, Indiana. Radar showed storms moving southeast at 30 knots, threatening nearshore and open waters.

Areas of concern include Monroe Harbor, Calumet Harbor, Hammond Marina, Burns Harbor, and Indiana Harbor. Harbors on Chicago’s South Side, including 31st Street and Jackson Park, are also at risk for sudden wind shifts and hazardous waves.

The weather service warns that small craft could be damaged by sudden gusts and choppy waters. Officials urge boaters to move to safe harbor immediately and remain there until the warning expires.

Storm activity is expected to continue through the morning, and additional marine advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
