Chicago, Illinois – Another round of accumulating snow is expected to hit northern Illinois and northwest Indiana late Monday into Tuesday, potentially snarling the evening commute and creating hazardous travel across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a fresh system will move in Monday afternoon, bringing periods of snow that could fall at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour in some areas—especially north of I-80. Visibility could drop quickly, and snow-covered roads may become impassable during peak travel hours.
Parts of Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, and Kane counties are all included in the threat area, with blowing snow and isolated lightning possible Sunday into Monday evening. Northwest Indiana cities like Valparaiso and Rensselaer may also see slippery roads with snowfall intensifying overnight.
Drivers should check conditions before traveling and allow extra time. Officials urge drivers to slow down, avoid tailgating snowplows, and stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. While snow is expected to taper off Tuesday morning, refreezing and lingering slick spots are possible through midweek.
Additional advisories could be issued as the system develops. Stay tuned for updates from the NWS and local emergency agencies.
