Chicago, IL – A burst of accumulating snow is expected across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana late tonight into early Sunday morning, bringing 2–5 inches of snow and slick travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.

Snow is forecast to begin between 9 p.m. and midnight, spreading from west to east. The heaviest snow is expected to fall in a 3–5 hour period overnight, producing rates of up to one inch per hour in some areas. The highest totals, between 3–5 inches, are likely north of Interstate 80, including Chicago, Aurora, and Rockford.

South of a Pontiac, IL to Fowler, IN line, forecasters say a brief wintry mix could develop, though icing impacts should be limited due to temperatures hovering near 31–33°F. The system will taper off by sunrise Sunday, but snow-covered roads and reduced visibility will create hazardous driving conditions through the morning commute.

Sunday’s highs are expected in the low 30s with additional lake-effect snow possible near Lake Michigan. Another round of wintry precipitation could arrive by midweek as colder air lingers.

Motorists are urged to slow down and allow extra time if traveling overnight, especially on I-80, I-88, and I-55.
