Chicago, IL – Early-morning thunderstorms are moving through northern Illinois, bringing frequent lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds through about 9 a.m. CDT Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.

The strongest storms are occurring across the blue-shaded area on the NWS map, including cities such as Rockford, DeKalb, Joliet, Ottawa, and Kankakee. These storms may produce gusty winds capable of moving small branches or unsecured objects, along with pea- to penny-size hail and brief heavy downpours.

Drivers are urged to use caution on wet roads and allow extra time for travel as rain may cause temporary visibility reductions and slowed traffic. Storms are moving northeast at about 35 mph and are expected to exit the area by mid-morning.

Conditions should improve by late morning, with clearing skies expected later in the day as drier air moves in behind the system.
