Chicago, IL – Much of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana will be under a Winter Storm Warning from 3 a.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, with forecasters calling for 6 to 10 inches of snow and locally higher totals in some areas. The storm will impact communities from Chicago to Rockford, Joliet, Aurora, Waukegan and Porter County, Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, snow will begin early Saturday morning and intensify through the afternoon and evening. Areas northwest of a line from Ottawa to Aurora to Waukegan could see the highest totals as heavier bands set up during the storm’s peak.

The warning covers Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, La Salle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston and Cook counties in Illinois, along with Lake and Porter counties in Indiana. Travel across major corridors—including I-55, I-57, I-80, I-88, I-90 and I-94—may become dangerous as snow accumulates.

Forecasters say visibility could drop quickly during heavier snowfall rates Saturday afternoon. Road conditions will worsen rapidly, and untreated surfaces may become slick for the remainder of the weekend. Motorists in Chicago, Joliet, Naperville, Rockford, Waukegan, Kankakee and Northwest Indiana should prepare for extended travel times or consider delaying trips.

The NWS urges anyone who must travel to carry emergency supplies such as a flashlight, food and water. Illinois road conditions are available at GettingAroundIllinois.com, and Indiana updates can be found at 511in.org.
