Chicago, Illinois – Heat and heavy rain marked July 2025 across Illinois, disrupting summer routines from Rockford to Chicago with above-average temperatures and rainfall totals rarely seen this decade.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the month closed with Chicago’s mean temperature at 77.5°F—2.1 degrees above normal. Rainfall reached 4.29 inches, about 0.6 inches above average, as repeated thunderstorms targeted the city. Rockford saw even more dramatic figures, with a mean temperature of 76.2°F (2.4 degrees above normal) and a striking 6.49 inches of rain—nearly 3 inches above normal. On July 24, Rockford tied its record for the warmest daily low at 74°F.

The warm, muggy air triggered frequent thunderstorms, leading to minor street flooding, slippery commutes, and spotty power outages, especially in low-lying areas. Residents along major corridors such as I-90 and I-55 faced periodic travel slowdowns. Emergency officials advised keeping devices charged and limiting non-essential travel during severe storms.

While no monthly top-ten records fell in Chicago, the ongoing wet spell reminded many of the historic July rains of recent years. With humid, stormy conditions expected to persist, residents should watch for further updates as advisories may continue into August.
