CHICAGO, Ill. – Widely scattered thunderstorms are expected to linger through 4 p.m. Monday across areas generally along and south of I-80 and along and east of I-55, bringing brief heavy downpours and occasional lightning. While severe weather is not anticipated, travel could be slowed in affected zones.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storm coverage will remain isolated through the afternoon, with main impacts being reduced visibility during downpours and sporadic lightning strikes. Storm chances may expand farther west into the evening hours.
Communities most at risk this afternoon include Joliet, Kankakee, Watseka, and the southeast Chicago suburbs. Motorists are urged to use caution on wet roads and reduce speed where visibility is limited. Outdoor activities should be moved indoors at the first sign of thunder.
The National Weather Service advises residents to remain weather-aware and check for updates if traveling in affected areas. Thunderstorm activity should diminish after sunset, but a renewed risk could develop west of the Chicago metro later tonight.
