Chicago, Illinois – A stretch of dry and mild late-summer weather will continue across much of Illinois this weekend, but a few thunderstorms could develop southeast of Interstate 57 Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, the risk is localized and remains low, but any storm that forms could bring brief downpours and lightning from Kankakee to Watseka and points farther south. Most of the Chicago metro is expected to stay dry with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.
Drivers traveling along I-57 and surrounding rural highways Saturday should keep an eye on rapidly changing skies, especially during the afternoon hours. While severe weather is not expected, outdoor plans in southeast Illinois could be interrupted by an isolated storm.
By Sunday, conditions turn cooler and breezy across northern Illinois, with highs only in the low to mid-70s. Lake effect clouds are likely to increase over southern Lake Michigan early next week, signaling the first hints of autumn air.
The National Weather Service notes that the next organized chance of rain may not arrive until midweek.
